Red Sox shortstop looks to put left wrist injury behind him.
Red Sox shortstop Jed Lowrie is determined to put his left wrist woes in the past and have sustained success in 2010. But before that quest truly gets underway, the switch-hitter will take a deep breath to soak in the holiday season. Lowrie recently took some time out of his schedule to discuss holiday remembrances and traditions with MLB.com.
MLB.com: When you think of the holiday season, what are your best holiday memories growing up?
Lowrie: I think just being with family and friends. I've got a pretty strong family back in Oregon. Everybody gets together at my aunt's house and we just spend the holidays with family.
MLB.com: What are the presents you liked getting the best when you were a kid?
Lowrie: I remember all the action figures. I got the GI Joe and all those action figures. There was one with dinosaurs, like dino riders, stuff like that. I always liked computer games too. So either action figures or computer games or baseball stuff. I had a lot of active stuff that I enjoyed doing.
MLB.com: What is the holiday season like for you now?
Lowrie: As I get older and I get more serious with my girlfriend, she's coming with me to my family in Oregon this year, so just kind of bringing her, and her mom is going to come along too. Just spending the holidays with them and having our families meet.
MLB.com: Does your family have rituals for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day? What are your traditions?
Lowrie: Growing up, we went to church late on the 24th and then we'd come home and open presents that night and then we'd wake up in the morning and do stockings. As the years have gone on, as my schedule has gotten crazier, we've changed a little where now we still go to church on the 24th but my aunt usually flies in from Minnesota on the 25th, and so we wait for her to open presents on the 25th. It's changed a little over the years.
MLB.com: When you go out shopping now for presents, are you an online shopper or do you hit the malls?
Lowrie: It depends on what I'm looking for. I like to go out to the malls just to get an idea of what I'm looking for, but if I can find it online for cheaper, I'm not afraid to do that. I use it as a strategy. As soon as the season is over, I'm pretty much thinking about holiday shopping just so I can beat the rush.
MLB.com: Are you a New Year's resolution guy?
Lowrie: I'm not a huge resolutions guy, but I enjoy celebrating New Year's. The last couple of years, I've celebrated with my girlfriend and my college roommate and his girlfriend. We kind of made it a tradition that we celebrate it together.
MLB.com: You get to this time of year -- the holidays -- does your baseball clock start to click in at all that it's getting closer?
Lowrie: Yeah, of course. You have the Winter Meetings and the new year is beginning and it's time to get ready for the next season. You get excited about the possibilities.
MLB.com: When do you start to get the itch to get down to Fort Myers? Is there a certain point of the year that it starts to hit you?
Lowrie: It's starting to hit me now. I'm in a little bit of a different circumstance. I'm going to have to control that because I need to give my wrist as much time as possible. I'm ready to get back out there.
