Rendering for Winter Classic unveiled

Flyers-Bruins matchup at Fenway to be played on New Year's.

In anticipation for the outdoor matchup between the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins on New Year's Day at Fenway Park, the National Hockey League unveiled an architectural rendering of the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on Thursday.

The 200-by-85-foot rink will extend from third to first base and, according to The Boston Globe, will be constructed by NHL facilities operations manager Dan Craig and his 200-member team. Work on the rink started on Thursday.

A tarp, then high-density Styrofoam and 52,000 feet of plywood will be installed six inches above ground level in order to prevent damage to the baseball field. Then 32,000 square feet of heavy-duty DuraDeck material will be placed on top, and once that's finished, ice panels that cool the rink above it will be transported in, said the Globe.

Last year's Winter Classic at Wrigley Field -- between the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks -- attracted the largest audience for a regular-season NHL game in 34 years. The 2010 Winter Classic will be the third version in the U.S. The first was in '08, and it pinned the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.

The game will start at 1 p.m. ET, and fans will have multiple options if they want to tune in. NBC will provide live broadcast coverage of the game in the U.S., while CBC and RDS will televise the game live in Canada.

In addition, NHL Network will offer all-access pregame and postgame coverage, while 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, WIP Radio in Philadelphia and SIRIUS XM Radio will carry live radio coverage. NHL.com will have digital video coverage.
