Sox hold conditional option for Lackey!

Club protects itself for 2015 if righty gets injured during deal.

Behind John Lackey's recently signed five-year, $82.5 million contract, the Red Sox hold a "conditional club option" at the minimum salary for the 2015 season to protect themselves in case the ace pitcher gets hurt, according to The Boston Globe.

The conditional option would force Lackey to play for the Major League minimum -- currently $400,000 -- if an old elbow injury forced him to miss significant time with surgery any time during the deal.

What exactly defines "significant time" is not known.

The contract, which includes a $3.5 million signing bonus, pays Lackey $18 million in 2010, followed by $15.25 million from 2011-14.

The 31-year-old right-hander missed time on the disabled list because of an elbow injury while with the Angels each of the past two seasons. From 2003-07, Lackey made 33 starts each season, and in '08 and '09, he made 24 and 27, respectively. In his eight-year career, he has thrown 200-plus innings four separate times.
